Snowboarding Tricks - Ollies

An Ollie is one of the most regular jumps using the tail of your Snowboard as a spring. This trick is the basic move for a lot of aerial tricks and it is also useful when jumping over small obstacles. In this section, learn how to perform an Ollie. Let our animation be your guide when doing this trick.

STEP 1: When starting out, find a gentle slope with as little traffic as possible. You will need a relatively wide space for this Snowboarding trick.

STEP 2: Crouch slightly on your board, shifting your weight to your back foot. For many beginners, it is normal to look down at your Snowboard as you start the Ollies. You will learn to look straight ahead as you get accustomed in doing this trick.

STEP 3: Start shifting your weight on your back foot to remove the pressure from your front foot. Lift the nose of your Snowboard and use the tail as a spring to get you in the air.

STEP 4: Once your front foot gets airborne, level your board in midair and raise your knees to your chest, keeping the board centered underneath you.

STEP 5: To land, put the nose of the board down. You can also land both feet at the same time. Bend your knees to absorb the impact of the landing.

STEP 6: Once your entire Snowboard touches the ground, ride away and repeat the steps above until you become comfortable doing it.

Ollies are very useful if you want to avoid blind landing and obstacles like rocks and branches when traveling fast. Practice and be comfortable in doing this trick. Once you master performing the Ollies, you can learn other aerial tricks and maneuvers.

This is a REALLY useful site! I love the looping animation to show everything really clearly. Then the step-by-step below it is super helpful in identifying each part of the move in the animation!

Well done:)

im pretty sure that a butter is actually an ollie attached to a 360.. u start as if ur going to ollie.. but once uv shifted weight form ur front foot to ur back u slide into a 360 (no carving involved).. and pop the rest of the board into the air at the same time..
i could be wrong about this.. so someone correct me. but we spen about 8 hrs straigh doing this one day with an instructor

This website is easy to learn and informative enough for those (like me) who has not been snowboarded for more than 3 years. It is worth to bookmark this website.

Great animation. Is it better to have feet ducked out for jumps and tricks?

I''ve started doing the nollie first it was just easier, but after a while i''ve discovered the animation and it really helped me :))
By the way if there are people like me, that have started doing the nollie first, it''s just the opposite, think of it like a nollie but from your tail and you will get it right.

Looking down at the board is the one thing that will prevent a successful ollie which is where I think step 2 is wrong. Make a big effort not to look down at your board. If you do your shoulders will not be in-line with the board and you will begin to initiate a turn in the air making landing more difficult
