HostelsClub.com is launching their American Winter Sale over the next six weeks. Clients from all over the world can participate in the generous discounts many American-based hostels are giving in order to give travellers a break from their recent holiday expenses.

This winter sale includes discounts such as 50% off in centrally located hostels in Manhattan to free nights in Fort Laude
rdale to the chance to win two free weeks stay between NYC, Boston and Washington, D.C. There has been an increase in domestic travel inside the States and HostelsClub is well aware of travellers maintaining their passion for travel yet grudgingly having to decrease their travel allowances. While normal winter activities such as snowboarding and skiing weigh heavily on the pocket, saving on accommodations is definitely a move in the right direction to allow for expenses to be shelled out on the finer things such wine, grub and fun.

he Winter Olympics returns to Canada on February 12. Until February 18, popular winter sports such as speed skating, snowboarding, and ice hockey will be spotlighted in Vancouver, host city in the British Columbia province. According to City-Discovery.com, the event also serves to spotlight the sightseeing attractions and outdoor adventures in and around the city. The travel website announced tha t a number of Vancouver attractions are available in its selection of tours and activities in Canada.

Currently, there are seven planned travel experiences in Vancouver on the website.

First on the list is Victoria and Butchart Gardens, which includes a ferry cruise through Active Pass in the Gulf Islands to British Columbia’s capital. It also features a drive to the Inner Harbor, Government Street shopping and dining, and a visit to the Butchart Gardens, Royal B.C. Museum and other attractions.

Next is the Vancouver Downtown Walking Tour Experience, which focuses on interesting areas from Gastown to Chinatown. Among the sights included in this activity are: Sinclair Centre, Waterfront Station, Marine Building, Holy Rosary Cathedral, Vancouver Public Library, Victory Square, Chinatown Millennium Gate and Dr. Sun Yat Set Chinese Garden.

The Vancouver City Highlights Tour, on the other hand, highlights the following attractions: Canada Place, Robson Street, Stanley Park, English Bay, Granville Island, Chinatown, Gastown, Queen Elizabeth Park and The Lookout. An alternative, the Vancouver City and Aquarium Tour, features most of the sights available in the City Highlights tour, with the Vancouver Aquarium replacing Queen Elizabeth Park and The Lookout.

With Vancouver and Capilano Suspension Bridge tour, travelers are in for a day of sightseeing and adventure. After visiting the city’s top attractions, travelers get to cross a 450 feet long bridge above the Capilano River. Another highlight is shopping in Granville Island, which has a public market, shops, eateries and galleries along the water.

As traffic jams are expected during Winter Olympics, the following activities: Vancouver City Highlights and Vancouver and Capilano Suspension Bridge will not be offered between January 28 and February 28, City-Discovery advised. Walking tours of Vancouver are instead offered during this period.

For other activities in Vancouver and surrounding areas, there is the tour in Grouse Mountain as well as in Whistler and Shannon Falls. More activities in Canada are available on City-Discovery.com, alongside things to do in top cities across the world.

Champion Athletic Apparel has unveiled its final prototype of its Champion Supersuit that will be the thinnest extreme-weather apparel gear ever designed and tested at high altitude on Mount Everest.

The Champion Supersuit insulation is just 3 millimeters thick, compared with a typical goose-down jacket thickness of 40 millimeters, and uses a nanotechnology insulation layer and a pro
prietary radiant warmth system. The result is a breakthrough ultrathin cold-weather garment that is no thicker than a typical computer mouse pad but provides equal insulating properties, greater mobility, and superior wind resistance than typical extreme weather gear.

“The Champion Supersuit uses advanced technology to conserve, capture and return heat unlike any other extreme-weather apparel currently being used on Everest,” said Mike Abbott, director of research and development for Hanesbrands Inc., the parent company of Champion apparel. “It has been a rewarding research and development project. By developing the Supersuit and other garment layers to be used on Everest, we have identified new Champion products to roll out and new features and enhancements to potentially add to our everyday line of Champion Athletic Apparel.”

Champion is outfitting a Mount Everest climbing team led by mountaineer Jamie Clarke with cutting-edge socks, base layer, insulating layers, soft shell jackets and pants, hard shell jackets and pants, and the Champion Supersuit. Clarke has been testing the gear and will wear a one-piece full-body Supersuit on Everest in April and May to keep him warm and mobile in the high winds and severe cold on the highest reaches of the 29,035-foot mountain.

“We were given the challenge to develop a summit suit that would advance the state of cold-weather gear, that wouldn’t look like anything else on the market, and that would protect climbers against extreme temperatures and conditions on Mount Everest,” Abbott said. “We have worked with several technology partners in and out of the apparel industry, including Element 21 Golf Company, which supplies the nanotechnology insulating material for the Champion Supersuit. We have made some significant breakthroughs, including the ability to use the nano insulation in commercially viable apparel products for the first time.”

Hanesbrands has a booth at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City for its Champion athleticwear and Duofold base layer brands. Champion is displaying prototypes of its Supersuit jacket in the booth, and Abbott and Clarke will be in the booth from noon to 4 p.m. Friday to discuss the Champion Supersuit project and the Everest expedition.

Recent storms which have caused so much trouble in the southland have dropped nothing but gold at Mountain High. White gold that is. Four feet of it. And it is still snowing. Snow showers began Sunday night and have only gotten heavier over the course of the week. Up to a foot and a half a day has been falling and the San Gabriel Mountains are now buried under the largest snowfall in recent memory.

As always, El Nino delivers for Mountain High. Both the 1997/98 and 2004/05 seasons were record winters for the Wrightwood Resort, and this season is on track for the same. Mountain High is now 100% open with all three resorts, 59 trails and 16 lifts. Dozens of gladed tree skiing areas are now available and the light powder is good enough to make even the Colorado resorts blush.

Says John McColly, Director of Marketing, “There is a reason I am in this business. And this is it. Skiers and snowboarders that braved the storm are grinning from ear to ear. And I’m one of them.”

With the fresh snow there is an enormous temptation to go out of bounds but both Mountain High and the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s department advise against that.

Says McColly, “Anything outside of Mountain High’s boundaries is not patrolled so if you run into any trouble, you are on your own. There is PLENTY of terrific tree skiing and natural terrain within Mountain High’s permitted area so stay in bounds, enjoy the fresh snow, and be safe.”

Mountain High is now open daily from 8:30am to 10:00pm. All roads are open however chains or 4-Wheel Drive are currently required. One ticket is good at all three resorts and there are free shuttles waiting to take you back and forth. Before planning your trip, logo onto Mountain High’s website at mthigh.com. There you can reserve tickets, get custom weather forecasts, and sign up for the Powder Alert to be notified of future storms. Or text MTHIGH to 99158 to have snow alerts sent to your text enabled cell phone.

If you are tired of flooded streets and threats of mud slides, head to Mountain High where there is nothing but fresh powder as far as the eye can see. It is Southern California’s closest winter resort and you wont find better conditions anywhere in the region.

“Staying on top of the back to back storms was our top priority” said Shaydar Edelmann, Director of Mountain Operations at Boreal. “Skiers and riders that braved the storm had grins from
ear to ear, powder turns one after another” he added.

Boreal is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily. “Boreal’s new 1-2-3 Ride Free Beginner program is attracting thousands of skiers and riders this season” said Ski School Manager, Nate Ellis. With a Free Season Pass offered at the end of our three lesson program, graduates get to enjoy the rest of the season for free.

“This storm, coupled with Boreal’s earliest season opening on October 9th has set the stage for an amazing season” said Jody Churich, General Manager at Boreal. “Plenty of snow, clear weather for the weekend, Boreal’s 5 terrain parks and an open freeway is the perfect scenario to get out and ski” she added.
