Friday, 30 May 2008VAIL, Colo. - In announcing its inductees for the Class of 2008, the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame celebrates the careers and lives of five distinguished individuals whose contributions to the sports of skiing and snowboarding have helped shape the snow sports industry as we know it today.
The five inductees - Paul T. Bailey, Chuck Ferries, Merrill G. Hastings Jr., Bill Jense n, and Knox T. Williams – have left a lasting legacy for future generations of snow sports enthusiasts. They will be honored at the 32nd annual Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame Induction Gala on Oct. 18 in Denver.
"I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome this esteemed class of Hall of Fame inductees," said Hall of Fame Executive Director Susie Tjossem. "The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum and Hall of Fame has grown exponentially over the last year and while I look forward to honoring our newest class, I also look forward to the opportunity to share both recent accomplishments and future endeavors with museum members and attendees of the Induction Gala."
The black-tie induction gala will be held at Denver Marriott City Center and serves as the major fundraiser for the nonprofit. Tickets are $150, and attending the event is a great way to honor the current class and the Hall’s previous 169 members.
In addition to honoring the 2008 class, the Hall of Fame will give two awards - "The Top of the Mountain Award" which recognizes institutions or entities that have contributed to the development of skiing in Colorado and "Competitor of the Year Award" to recognize an athlete with Colorado ties who has distinguished him or herself in international competitive snow sports. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club at Howelsen Hill will be honored with the "The Top of the Mountain Award" for producing more Olympic athletes than any other ski club in the United States. Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club at Howelsen Hill has been in existence for nearly a century and has the oldest ski jump still in use in Colorado. Lindsey Kildow Vonn will be the recipient of the "Competitor of the Year Award". In 2008, Lindsey Vonn won the overall Alpine Skiing World Cup title to complete the first American sweep of the men’s and women’s overall titles in 25 years. She also won the US Alpine Championships Combined (downhill and slalom) title, marking her best ski season to date.

The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame Class of 2008 includes:
Paul T. Bailey - Paul was a founding member of the Copper Mountain Ski area and Chairman of the Board from Copper Mountain’s inception in 1972 through 1978. Paul was president of the Loveland Basin Ski Team and treasurer of the Rocky Mountain Division. He helped bring World Cup skiing to Copper Mountain and continues to be an active supporter of ski-related organizations such as Colorado Ski Country and the U.S. Ski Team. Paul started racing at the age of 58 and has enjoyed much success on the racing circuit. This past season, he was the National Nastar Champion in the 85 and over category.
Chuck Ferries – Chuck has had an outstanding career as a U.S. Alpine ski racer and U.S. Ski Team coach. Chuck was a member of the Squaw Valley U.S. Olympic Ski Team, a member of the U.S. World Championship Team, and a member of the Innsbruck U.S. Olympic Ski Team. He contributed his time, skills, and financial resources while serving as president of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association from 2002-2006 and brought recognition to Colorado and the ski industry while serving as president of Scott USA. He was inducted into the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame in 1989.
Merrill G. Hastings Jr. - Merrill served in the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army and after returning to the U.S. a decorated hero, joined the construction crew in building Arapahoe Basin. Merrill was a Berthoud Pass ski school director and a national ski patrolman, starting the ski association that evolved into the Rocky Mountain Division of PSIA. He started Skiing Magazine in 1948 and successfully ran it for 16 years. In March of 1998, Merrill was named to Ski Industry Hall of Fame by Skiing Magazine.
Bill Jensen – Bill began his career working as a lift operator. He quickly rose up through the ranks landing at the helm of Vail Resorts serving as the President and CEO. He helped to secure and successfully host the Alpine World Championships and annual Birds of Prey World Cup races. Bill’s sharp insight, customer service focus, and implementation of innovative programming helped him make Vail one of the most popular resorts in the world today.
Knox T. Williams - Knox developed an avalanche safety program recognized throughout the world. He built the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the oldest avalanche forecast center in the United States, into one of the most respected centers in the world. He developed a methodology for archiving weather and avalanche data which has allowed for more accurate mountain weather and avalanche forecasting in Colorado and managed to preserve the CAIC through 35 years of government cutbacks.

Friday, 30 May 2008The newly developed centre is centrally located on Duke Street directly opposite the Sofitel Hotel and is the place in downtown Queenstown to purchase mountain products and ski packages for Coronet Peak and The Remarkables.
NZSki Ltd CEO James Coddington said the Queenstown Snow Centre had been redesigned and tripled in size to ensure customers receive first class service. "Seven sal es desks have been installed to reduce waiting time for customers, and a dedicated play area will entertain children, making it easy for families to book their snow packages with children in tow."
Skiers and riders will find everything they need at this one-stop snow shop from lift passes and rental through to private lessons and transport.
Every day throughout the season, transport for Coronet Peak and The Remarkables departs from the Snow Centre.
Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are scheduled to open on June 7 and June 21, respectively. From June 7, the Snow Centre will be open seven days per week until the close of the season.

Tuesday, 27 May 2008SUNDANCE, UTAH - The Sundance Summer Children's Festival, June 14, 11am until 4pm, offers a celebration of children's entertainment certain to enthrall the entire family. Set beneath the majestic Mt. Timpanogos, this year’s Children’s Festival offers activities that are both fun and educational.
Entertainment will take place on Ray’s Lawn and will include a kayak demonstration, inter active kid’s yoga demonstration, a clown, and the Sundance avalanche dogs.
Children will love the pony rides with the Sundance Stables, scenic lift rides, face painting, crafts from the Sundance Nature Center and Art Shack, a youth bike course, a petting zoo, and a real fire truck and ambulance to climb aboard and be able to talk to a firefighter.
Led by Tracy Christensen, the Sundance dog teams are a critical component of the Sundance Ski Patrol Snow Safety Program. These avalanche dogs will be strutting their stuff at the 2008 Sundance Children’s Festival on June 14.
Participating local vendors will bring children’s items and food. There will be a barbecue consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages, and other baked goods. Admission to the festival is free. Vendors are subject to charge for goods.

Monday, 26 May 2008WASHINGTON - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with K2 Sports, has announced a voluntary recall of K2 "Auto" Series Snowboard Bindings, Model Year 2007. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: K2 "Auto" Series Snowboard Bindings, Model Year 2007
Units: About 2,500 pairs
Distributor: K2 Sports of Seattle, Wash.
Hazard: The cable that links the toe strap to the binding could break, posing a fall hazard to snowboarders.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description and Models: This recall involves the 2007 model year K2 "Auto" snowboard bindings. They were sold in black or white. "K2" and "Auto" are printed on the toe strap.
Sold by: Snowboard, ski, and sporting goods retailers nationwide from August 2007 through May 2008 for about $230.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled bindings immediately and take them to the retailer where the bindings were purchased or contact K2 Sports directly to arrange for free shipment and repair.

Friday, 23 May 2008Treble Cone Ski Area was blanketed in snow, thanks to the cold front currently hitting the south of the south island. Last May 20, 15cm fell at the base area and with snow still falling heavily, another few centimeters are expected before the end of this weather cycle.
"With less than six weeks until opening day (June 30th), and summer developments all complete, it is great timing an d an exciting start for the upcoming season," Area Manager Jackie van der Voort said.
The Snow Making team started work on the mountain this week and have all thirty snow guns ready to start making snow as early as next week, weather conditions permitting.
The early snow fall is also a timely reminder for skiers and snowboarders to take advantage of the Early Bird Sale and purchase their Season Passes at bargain prices. The sale which ends on the 31st of May includes a range of passes from a 5-Day Pass to the Premium Pass which provides unlimited skiing and riding for the entire season. "We are very happy with how season pass sales have gone this year, and with early bookings out of Australia up on last year, it's looking like we're in for a good season," Ms. van der Voort said.
Teenage skiers and snowboarders can look forward to two new Freeride programs this season which are being introduced by Treble Cone's Award Winning Snow Sports School. Tim Williams,Snow Sports School Director, says the programs have been set up in response to growing customer demand last year and are specially designed to cater to teenagers who wish to progress in the dynamic sport of free skiing / boarding. The TC Freeski Camp will run during the school holidays while the all new Freeride Program will run each weekend from July through to September.
Treble Cone continues to lead the NZ ski industry in sustainable tourism initiatives, with a major focus on energy savings, car pooling, and recycling. 2007 saw a 10-15% saving in energy and the average car load increased by one person per car. Ms. van der Voort is delighted with how staff and customers embraced the initiatives last year and is excited about improving on these this season.
