EUROPE - The New Zealand Snowboard Team has completed its final competition of the 2008 European campaign: the FIS World Cup Halfpipe in Bardonecchia, Italy.
Kendall Brown (Mt Manganui), after a great week of training, landing backside 720s and attempting her first 900 was consistent throughout qualifying, semi-finals and finals finishing in 5th place – her best result of the season and ranking her 13th on the World Cup tour. She is well on her way to achieving a top-30 end of season ranking which will guarantee New Zealand an additional start at next season's crucial Olympic qualifying period.
Ben Stewart (Whangamata) made it through to semi-finals and finished 14th, getting close to the 12-man final. Stewart, aged just 15, has been rapidly progressing over the past few months consistently making the final cut whilst competing against the world’s best on the Ticket To Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour. The ‘TTR World Snowboard Tour’ is the largest culmination of independent snowboard freestyle events acting under one common tour flag.
He qualified 5th for his first ever 6 star TTR final the “Davos Evolution” in Switzerland. Most recently he placed 13th overall at the European Open TTR 6 star event and 10th in the "Rock the Spot” TTR 4 star event in Bardonecchia Italy.
Ashley Light, Performance Director, New Zealand Winter Performance Programme (WPP) said these results, together with the recent successes enjoyed by the New Zealand Free Ski Team, indicated a strong New Zealand team going into the next Winter Olympics.
"The WPP Snowboard programme is going from strength to strength. The hard work and dedication of both the athletes and the coaches is paying off as we track towards Vancouver 2010."
The team is now back in Colorado for a month of training under the Winter Performance Programme prior to the second competition phase of the season in North America. The next event is the FIS Word Cup in Calgary, Canada in a 22-foot halfpipe on 28/29 February.

France’s Anne Sophie Pellissier and Italy’s Manuel Pietropoli reigned supreme in the Halfpipe contest of the Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup Season. This was held last Sunday, January 27 at the Bardonecchia—Me
lezet in Italy.
Pellissier finished with a total of 44.5 points, defeating Spain’s Queralt Castellet, who won second place while Sophie Rodriguez, Pellissier’s teammate, got the third spot.
Meanwhile, Pietropoli claimed the top spot of the podium after finishing with 45.5 points. Markus Malin came in second with 44.7 and defending champ Peetu Piiroinen came in third with 43.3.

Top US snowboarder Andy Finch won at the recently concluded Swatch TTR Six (6) Star O’Neill Evolution Halfpipe Competition. It was held last Friday, January 25 at Davos, Switzerland.
Finch impre ssed the judges with his skills, sweeping away the victory from Torstein Horgmo who was barely 20 points behind.
Nicholas Mueller, Collin Frei, Manuel Pietropoli, Ches Guldemond, Mathieu Crepel and other big names in the world of Snowboarding graced the event.
Meanwhile, world class snowboarders are gearing up for the Burton European Open. The group will soon be heading out to the next destination – Laax, Switzerland.

Norway’s top snowboarder Andreas Wiig bagged the Snowboard SlopeStyle gold at the recently concluded ESPN X Games 12, held at Aspen, Colorado.
Wiig has impressed the judges and spectators by exh ibiting a perfect run of 900 degrees and 1080-degree aerial rotation, snatching the gold from six-time X Games gold medalist Shaun White.
At the Men’s Snowboard SlopeStyle, snowboarders ride down the hill while exhibiting various freestyle moves that best showcase their speed, agility, and aerial skills.
Aside from Wiig, event winners include Norwich, Vermont’s Kevin Pearce who won the silver medal, and White who bagged the bronze medal.

A new bill, authored by Representative Bob Constan, requires skiers and snowboarders alike to wear helmets. The said bill was passed shortly after a skiing accident.
The said incident occurred last De cember, when a 13-year old girl who was skiing at Shanty Creek Resort’s Schuss Mountain in Bellaire died after suffering from a head injury. Authorities claimed that the girl’s death could have been prevented if she was wearing a helmet.
The bill also involves a $100 fine for those skiers and snowboarders who will be caught without helmets. The said bill was co-sponsored by Representative Coleman Young and Aldo Vagnozzi.
Meanwhile, Michigan’s ski and snowboarding resorts like Apple Mountain Resort, Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, Crystal Mountain, Nub’s Nob Ski Area and Snowsnake Ski and Golf are currently offering helmets for rent for only $5 to $10 a day.
