High Winds Cancel 2nd Halfpipe in Saas Fee
TUESDAY, 28 NOVEMBER 2006
SAAS FEE, Switzerland - High southern winds Saturday forced organizers to cancel the second of two World Cup halfpipe contests set for the Swiss glacier. The first event, held on Thanksgiving Day, was swept by U.S. Snowboarding riders Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) and Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH) to open the competition year.
"It's been windy all week," said Head Coach Mike Jankowski, "but this was a different kind of wind, it was blowing out of the south and unfortunately created some pretty dangerous conditions up on the glacier. They made the right decisiion to keep the riders out of the sky and off the glacier today."
Next stop for U.S. Snowboarding is the opening of the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix slated for Dec. 13-17 in Breckenridge, CO.
"We've definintely got the momentum going," added Jankowski. "Now we're all looking forward to going home and getting some laps in on our home pipe before the Grand Prix. Breckenridge always has one of the best pipes of the year."
