The construction of the venues in Whistler for the 2010 Winter Olympics are going, "exceedingly well," according to Read Full Story

Two new venues are currently being constructed - the Sliding Center and the Nordic venue. The Sliding Center will host the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events of the Winter Games. It is expected to be completed by the summer of next year.
Meanwhile, the Nordic venue's construction is also on-going. According to the report, the ski landing sites have already been cleared and graded. By the end of the summer, the foundations of the ski jump structures are expected to be completed.
Aside from the construction of new buildings, other existing venues are also being upgraded. An example of which is the site of the ski competitions.

A documentary about the history of snowboarding is about to be released on October this year, according to various reports. The film, entitled Snow Blind, will trace the beginnings of this sport from Shermin
Poppen's invention of the "snurfer" to its inclusion in the Winter Olympic Games.
Featured in the film are interviews with some of snowboarding's biggest personalities including Shermin Poppen himself as well as gold medalist of this year's Winter Games, Hannah Teter.

The continued rise of the global temperature not only endangers the existence of glaciers but also the lives of those who love to go mountaineering and do winter sports. This is according to what Patrick Jo
seph blogged about at the Sierra Club's website, www.sierraclub.org.
According to Joseph, the warmer temperatures will further increase the risk of avalanches and rock falls during climbs. Aside from that, there is also the danger of meltwater lakes bursting and overflowing. Worse, 80 percent of the Alps' glacier cover may be lost if the summer air temperatures rise by three degrees Celsius, according to computer modeling experiments, Joseph said.

The website www.ifyouski.com has recently put out a report on the continuing struggle to save the gl
aciers in the European Alps.
People at the Stubai Glacier in Austria have spread out a layer of fleece-like fabric on its remaining glacier before they get completely melted by the summer heat. What used to be an expanse of six square miles is now reduced to an area of less than two square miles with a thickness of 50 to 100 yards.
But the Stubai Glacier isn't the only part of the Alps that will be affected since other parts of it are also being endangered by the rising temperatures. While it can cost a lot of people who work at snow resorts their jobs, the even greater danger lies on the fact that people who live near the Alps depend on the glaciers for their water supply. They may face water shortages in the future if the current trend in the climate change continues.

In two-weeks time some of the world's top snowboarders will be battling it out for the Burton New Zealand Open. Now on its fourth year, this year's competition will be held in Snowpark NZ in the Cardrona Vall
ey on August 3 to 5. The riders will be competing in Halpipe, Quarterpipe and Slopestyle events.
