The bids for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics have been narrowed down to three cities, according to various reports. The remaining contenders are Soichi in Russia, Salzburg in Austria and PyeongChang in South Korea. Where there were seven candidates, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Borjomi in Geor gia, Jaca in Spain and Sofia in Bulgaria did not make the final cut.

Of the three, PyeongChang and Salzburg were also prime contenders in hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. The South Korean city lost by only three votes 56 to their 53 while Salzburg was third. The election was eventually won by Vancouver.

After the announcement of the three remaining candidates, they have until January of next year to submit their bid dossier to the International Olympic Committee. The winning city will then be announced on July 7, 2007 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

PARK CITY, Utah (June 27) - Looking for tips on nurturing your future Olympian? Then look to the new CD produced by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association and USA Swimming titled "Successful Sports Parenting," now available. Packed with tools and information for parents, coaches and club a dministrators, "Sports Parenting" is the most comprehensive resource ever created to support the successful development of young athletes - from novice to elite level - of all sports.

The CD is hosted by Deborah Phelps, a Baltimore county middle school principal and mother of swimmer and six-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps.

"USA Swimming and USSA have created an exceptional resource for all parents," said Phelps. "Having a voice with the many parents that view this CD will allow me to let them know that I think parenting is a very collaborative endeavor. When I reflect on my years of parenting, I always think of it as a triangular approach to my children's lives that has been inclusive of the coach, the athlete and myself, the parent."

Topics include information for parents on a child's growth and development, physical wellbeing (including nutrition, hydration and disordered eating), competition and training, as well as tips on how to best balance and support your child. Also addressed is how coaches and parents can work together better (dealing with conflict, being part of a team) and how clubs can better work with parents (volunteers, meetings, communication tools, retention, code of conduct).

"'Successful Sports Parenting' is the latest in a series of educational resources that USSA has produced to provide coaches, parents and administrator with practical, hands-on tools that they can use to help young athletes achieve their potential," said David McCann, USSA director of Educational Services. "The interactive, multi-media format of the CD sets it apart from your typical textbook or web-site. It's a dynamic resource that really sends a powerful message to all involved in youth sports."

The CD features more than 50 interviews with top coaches, athletes, parents and sports psychologists (including athletes like three-time Winter Olympian and World champion Daron Rahlves and first-time Olympian Jimmy Cochran, U.S. Men's Alpine Ski Team Head Coach Phil McNicol, alpine World Championships medalist Erik Schlopy's parents Kent and Marni Schlopy, and more). Also available on the CD are presentations and hundreds of handouts for coaches and clubs to use in organizational meetings and for planning.

While this guide will be especially beneficial to clubs, the fact that it is non-sports specific makes it a valuable tool for any organization at the start of an athlete's career including clubs, youth teams, PTAs, high schools and more. This comprehensive guide will help any coach alleviate common issues with new parents coming into a sport.

"One of the best ways we can support our clubs at a grassroots level is to provide them with the resources to educate parents and volunteers on how to effectively support their children in their sport," said Pat Hogan, USA Swimming's club development director. "This CD offers a wealth of updated, relevant information from a multitude of sources that will be applicable for parents at all the different stages in their child’s experience in (their) sport, from the parent whose child is just learning to the parent whose child is competing on a national-level team. In the end, better-educated parents make for a better experience for youngsters in sports."

Cathy Sellers, USOC Coaching manager added, "Parents are the greatest influence on their children, even when it is in the athletic arena. Good parents, like good coaches, can make the sports experience one that is memorable and worth repeating. This CD guides parents and coaches through potential problem issues, so that young athletes can enjoy their sport experience. Everyone becomes a winner."

"Successful Sports Parenting" is endorsed, used and distributed by the U.S. Olympic Committee and 11 National Governing Bodies: USSA, USA Swimming, U.S. Tennis Association, USA Hockey, U.S. Speed Skating, U.S. Rowing, USA Water Polo, U.S. Curling, U.S. Figure Skating, USA Diving and U.S. Synchronized Swimming. The CD can be purchased online (retail is $39.99, special prices are available for USSA members and organizations) at http://educationshop.ussa.org/.

MT. HOOD, Ore. (June 21) - With the second straight bluebird competition day at Windells in the books, the Chevrolet Revolution Tour officially closed out the 2006 season Wednesday with Josh Dodson (Bend, OR) and Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, UT) stomping victories in slopestyle.
> It was Dodson's his first competition back after he suffered a fractured tibia and fibula when competing in the U.S. Open last March, but the 16-year-old had time to dial his run while training at Windells all week with his teammates from the Mt. Bachelor Ski Education Foundation.

"This was only my third time back on snow since the U.S. Open and it feels good to be riding so quickly," said Dodson, who has competed in a number of Revolution Tour events. "It was a short course with a couple of rails and a couple of jumps, but the features were good and it was a lot of fun. There are a lot of really good riders here, so this victory is big."

For Gulini, she cashed in on her first trip to Windells with some professional coaching from U.S. Snowboarding as part of the Project Gold freestyle camp that began June 13.

"This contest was so fun and it went really fast," said the 14-year-old," I'd never been in a Revolution Tour event before and they are so much better organized than any contest I've ever been in. It's so nice not to have to wait around all day. The features were mellow, but really fun."

Rounding out the top three for the men was Tyler Troy (Wilton, CT) and Bobby Flanigan (Ketchum, ID), while Katie Williams (Bend, OR) and Mikaela Casey (Mound, MN) nabbed the final two spots for the women.

Rick Bower, 1999 World halfpipe champion and fresh addition to the U.S. Snowboarding coaching roster broke down the camp and the contest like this:

"These riders are truly unbelievable. These kids learned more tricks in a few days than I learned in all the camps I'd ever attended. They are so hungry to learn and it's really cool to think that these are the riders we'll be taking to the Junior World Championships. The pipeline for developing these riders is in place and it's fulfilling as a former athlete to move into the coaching rank and see this kind of progression. That's what the Project Gold camp and the Revolution Tour is all about and these kids are stomping it."

The Chevrolet Revolution Tour is powered by Burton Snowboards, Bonfire, Smith, Palmer, Swix, Snowboard Magazine and Windells.

The booming indoor skiing and snowboarding facility in Beijing, China may eventually take its toll on the capital city's water supply. This is according to Geoffrey York's report at Toronto's The Globe and Mail.

According to York, Beijing is already suffering from its worst
drought in half a century. It may be aggravated further if the resorts continue with their current consumption of ground water. York referred to a study conducted that put an estimate of 3.8 million cubic meters of water are pumped annually by the resorts. The study also said that that such amount of water is enough for the annual water needs of some 42,000 city residents.

The Chinese government has already tried to intervene by putting a hefty fine of as much as $1,500 when one is caught wasting water. If nothing is done as soon as possible, there will be a shortage of as much as 1.1 billion cubic meters of water by the time of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, York said in his report.
