FRIDAY, 30 JUNE 2006
The bids for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics have been narrowed down to three cities, according to various reports. The remaining contenders are Soichi in Russia, Salzburg in Austria and PyeongChang in South Korea. Where there were seven candidates, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Borjomi in Georgia, Jaca in Spain and Sofia in Bulgaria did not make the final cut.
Of the three, PyeongChang and Salzburg were also prime contenders in hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. The South Korean city lost by only three votes 56 to their 53 while Salzburg was third. The election was eventually won by Vancouver.
After the announcement of the three remaining candidates, they have until January of next year to submit their bid dossier to the International Olympic Committee. The winning city will then be announced on July 7, 2007 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
