The United States Ski Mountaineering Association has expanded its annual Mountain Hardwear/Life-Link/Dynafit Ski Mountaineering Race Series into seven races for this winter season. For this year's race, two new loc
ations have been added namely Kirkwood Mountain Resort, California and Sugarbush Resort/Mad River Glen, Vermont.
The series started last January 7 at Whistler Blackcomb, Canada with the Arcteryx® Randonnee Rally and will continue at Sugarbush Resort/Mad River Glen on February 5. Afterwards, the race will be held at Crested Butte, Colorado on Feb. 11, and then to Outdoor Research® Rally in Alpental, Washington on Feb. 25, the June Mountain Race, California Mar. 4, followed by the Marmot® Race at Kirkwood Mountain Resort on Mar. 11 and will wrap up in the American Cup Race in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Mar. 25.
There will be a race and recreational category for both men and women. The event is open to skiers, telemarkers, and split-board snowboarders. Participants will use the races to accumulate points for the overall series championship. However, for this year, competitors can also accumulate points for the Black Diamond Powder Keg Race that will be held on Mar. 18 in Salt Lake City.
Profits from the series will benefit local avalanche forecasting centers and search and rescue groups. The series is sponsored by Mountain Hardwear, Life-Link, Arcteryx, Dynafit, Marmot, Petzl, Crazy-Creek, Couloir Magazine, Backcountry Magazine, Ibex, Suunto, Croakies, Clif Bar, Off-Piste Magazine, Honey Stinger, Adventure Medical Kits, Buff Headwear. McNett Revivex, Pro Ski Service, and Mammoth Mountaineering.

Subaru’s “Race and Ace,” North America’s premier ski and golf competition, has expanded into three northwest events that will take place in Central Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The competition started in 2003
and has attracted participants all over the country ever since. Registration for the event is now open.
The Race and Ace draws skiers, snowboarders and golfers with its simple yet unique format. Competitors will ski or ride a giant slalom course in the morning and golf 18 holes in the afternoon. There are three categories namely elite individual, two-person teams and four-person teams.
The Washington competition will be held on April 1 with the skiing and riding portion at Snoqualmie Summit Ski Resort and the golfing portion at the Newcastle Golf Club’s Coal Creek Course. Afterwards, on May 6, the competition will be held at Central Oregon. Skiers and riders will compete in a dual giant slalom at Mt. Bachelor and then golf in 18 holes at Sunriver Resort’s Meadows course. Lastly, on May 20, the final Race and Ace event will be held in Idaho at Tamarack Resort where participants will compete on its excellent ski mountain and Robert Trent Jones III signature golf course.
Deadline for registration is two weeks before each event. Early registration fee is $229 per person and ends one month before each event. The fee is inclusive of skiing/riding, golf, a pre-event registration and cocktail reception, gift bag and an awards dinner after the competition. For more details, log on raceandace.com.

On February 11, eager snowboarders and skiers will converge at Crystal Ground Snowpark, Riezlern for the Iron Night 2006. Participants will battle it out for the prize money of 1,500 € and maybe even a bran
d new dirt bike!
Skiers and riders will show off their best moves, not only on Crystal Ground’s existing kickers and boxers, but also on specially prepared obstacles. There will be a male and female category for both disciplines. Two participants will compete in each round with the best rider or skier advancing in the next round.
Also, there will be a best trick contest after the main event with a brand new dirt bike at stake. Afterwards, make your way to the Sweetlife Club for a night of hard partying courtesy of Funk sunglasses. Music will be provided by DJ D. Funk and DJ Stamina.

Tuesday, 31 January 2006The Sapient-Showcase Showdown will debut on Feb. 24 to 25 at Whistler Blackcomb, Canada. This unique and innovative competition will sport a whole new format dubbed as “Pipestyle” where riders will make their way over tombstones, rails, boxes and spines. The competition will take place at Whistler’s Super Night Pipe.
Sapient, the headline sponsor of the event, has generously given $25, 000 for prize money. Furthermore, the following sponsors have contributed a total of $15,000: Anon, RED, Option, Vans, Salomon-Bonfire and 32. A party will be held at GLC after the event.

Monday, 30 January 2006Join Belleayre Mountain and the Relay for Life Team of the Margaretville Telephone Company (MTC) in a “Race for Fun.” The race will be for the benefit of the American Cancer Society and will be held on February 4 at Belleayre Mountain in Highmount, New York. Skiers and snowboarders of all levels are welcome to help out.
Early registration is required since there are only 200 slots av ailable. Registration must be made before Feb. 3 and costs $20 inclusive of lift ticket and racing fee. Moreover, a WDST Apres-Ski Concert Series will be held in the Overlook Lodge after the race.
The Relay for Life Team is a community that raises money for The American Cancer Society. Last year, the team raised over $8,500 which made them the top fund raiser out of 68 teams. To register, call MTC at 845-586-3311 or log on to www.belleayre.com for more details.
