Sandboarding - Features

Sandboarding - Features Amazingly, there are people who take boarding to a new level and surface: the sand. Sandboarding follows the same downhill Snowboarding - only, you travel across sand instead of snow. This variation of Snowboarding mainly involves standing with your two feet locked onto a board and carving arks down a sand dune.

The strange thing about Sandboarding is that it's not something that was recently invented by some extreme sports enthusiasts. This sport actually dates back to the Ancient Egyptian times. There are even records of ancient Egyptians cruising down sand dunes on wooden boards. And although rare, there are black and white photographs of upright Sandboarding which dates back to even as early as World War II.

Sandboarding actually rose to attention together with Snowboarding. But due to the popularity of Skiing and the easier access to suitable slopes, Snowboarding grew explosively, leaving Sandboarding a bit unknown and odd. Even so, Sandboarding is prevailing nowadays, and with more specific equipment and waxes, it is becoming more popular. You can actually use a snowboard on sand although it is far from ideal. You will need special wax to get you going if you find that you are better off with a specific sandboard. These waxes are currently available in some shops and even in online shops. Still, many sandboarders prefer to create their own sandboards.

Like Mountain Boarding, Sandboarding is something that can be done all year round. As soon as the snow melts, you can always search for sand dunes at the beach or desert area and just continue boarding. The sport can be done standing up and barreling down the slope on a snowboard, or, for the more adventurous, lying down and racing at speeds of up to 80 kph (50 mph).

Currently, although it is still far from the mainstream, there are very popular Sandboarding events and some well-known ambassadors of the sport. The number one site about Sandboarding is www.sandboard.com. The site will give you a lot more information about the sport and will bring you into contact with Dr. Dune - a Sandboarding enthusiast who can answer any inquiry you might have. Visit it if you are curious to learn more about Sandboarding.

Benefits of Sandboarding

As more people became aware of what's happening on the sand dunes and started getting into it, the skill level of Sandboarding dramatically increased. If you're wondering why a lot of people nowadays are getting into Sandboarding, we suggest you read the following reasons why you should Sandboard:
  • Sandboarding is something that can be done all year round. As soon as the snow melts, you can always search for sand dunes at the beach or desert area and just continue boarding.
  • You don't need any previous experience to be able to sandboard. Still, a sense of balance is a bonus.
  • In Sandboarding, you can easily control the board and speed when you turn, stop and jump.
  • Sandboarding is often considered as the best prelude to Snowboarding. This is because the equipment and movements of Sandboarding are similar to downhill Snowboarding. Only, the sand is softer than the snow and allows the boarder to ride a bit slower than snow. This gives the boarder a chance to get their balance on the sandboard and to easier control their sandboard.
  • Sandboarding is a lot cheaper for those who love Snowboarding and live near the beach. They can just go down the coast and hit the dunes during their free time instead of spending a lot of money on a few weeks in the Alps.
  • Sandboarding is an easy cross-over if you have snowboarded or skateboarded before. If you have never boarded before, Sandboarding is a great way to start since it's very easy to pick up.

Today, Sandboarding is becoming more popular around the world. So what are you waiting for? Go Sandboarding!
