I went to Kicking Horse in January on a day trip out from Banff. It was an awesome area with loads of powder when I went. Very steep bowl at the top but more gentle closer to the resort. It used to be a heli-only resort but there is now a gondola that takes you up to the old heli drop zone.
From there, there is a drop off into a huge steep bowl to the left with tree runs too. From the right is a narrow ridge that also has some scary drop offs and steeps as well as an easy road

Although I haven't actually been to Fernie or kicking horse I have just returned from a boarding holiday in Banff where the word on the street was that Fernie was the place to go. It seemed to get everyone else's share of snow whilst I was there!

You can also hike a long way up another ridge to get higher
for what looked like a great off piste area but I was too lazy to take the
hike.
The resort in bounds area is pretty small and I think would only take a week to
get a bit boring if conditions were sketchy, Fernie is larger. There was no
accommodation on the hill at that time and the nearest town is Golden about
20mins drive down in the valley, however they had lots of plans up in the day
lodge illustrating the condos and hotels they are due to build. Lake Louise is 2 hours away by coach and about $80 for a
return trip plus day lift pass.

Fernie is way smaller than Whistler and harder to get to. Whistler is all about money - if you ain't got money you'll have a crap time. It's precisely the small-town atmosphere that makes Fernie rock. For 230 quid you can get a season long midweek pass and cruise in the 29 feet of snow it gets on average each year. Plus no attitude , just real friendly, no lift lines, plenty of top quality boarders to hang out with. The downside is that nightlife is fairly limited - Fernie's more geared to those staying for longer than a week.

Fernies night life is virtually non existant! Only noe club "Eldorado" which is tiny but kinda cool. Don't go to Fernie thinking there be night life they're really isn't! If your on the mountain there's not much going on up there either except the Powder horn is the place later on. Kelsy's is the busy restaurant in Fernie and "the Pub" down town is ok too. Its an amazing place but there is really hardly anything going on at night! Wicked place though! 10 out of 10!

Nah, not really. I was told by the locals to tell everyone it sucks That way, it won't become a big cheesy tourist resort !!
We went this year, and it's really amazing. There's too much to list...
You've got 5 natural bowls to play in - make sure you check out Curry bowl and Lizard Bowl - get their early or the powder sharks will rip it up !!
Also, make sure you take a trip down Giggly Gully - a great drop on that run.
Oh yeah, and the pull-back lift if you can stand a t-bar back up. The run down there is really nice with some amazing tree runs.
Terrain park is a bit crappy, only 3 huuuuge jumps and 3 or 4 rails, but they are box rails so good to learn on.
Fernie really rewards you if you spend time to find off-piste, or go snow cat. There's lots of terrain to play on, but it's hard to get to - and the bears like eating people.
I am jealous ! I wanna go back !!!

I stayed at the Lizard Creek in Feb. It was the best holiday I've ever had! Wasn't that expensive.
Staying on the mountain is the best bit the lift was a board's throw away. The Lizard is 5 star but is nothing like the prices at Whistler and you get alot for your money.
Only thing with Fernie is the park doesn't have its own lift which gets abit annoying after hitting the tables and having to wait 10 mins for another run. (But so what really)
I remember saying to a mate that if Fernie was what heaven was like I'd kill myself straight away, its perfect, hardly any people, no queues, lots of snow and no germans!!!!! 10/10

Ok, you're tempting me now. How did you guys get out there? Where did you fly to? How did you get from the airport to Fernie? What did accommodation/transfers cost?

check out http://far.redtree.com for reviews of each (well most) run, loads of pics. not the usual promotional cheesy site, its doesnt have to be. Fernie sells its self.
When we were there I read something about Fernie Alpine Resort joining forces with Island Lake Lodge to open up alot more. Or maybe that was drunken dreams.

We stayed in town, not in resort - it's only a few minutes away and most people hitch to the resort coz it's so friendly out there and no problem.
Cheapness - Samesun hostel (www.samesun.com) - that was our choice and it kicked arse Don't go Raging Elk, that's a bit of a dive....
Plushness - Anything in resort is generally well nice. Cornerstone lodge or Lizard Creek - MMMmmmm, bisto.
Hope you have fun!
