any tips on rails and boxes??? i am fairly new to snowboarding but i am good enough to start doin grinds and stuff... any tips would help... i did try to just do a normal grind on a box last weekend, (the kind that look like a semi circle coming out of the ground) i dunno what it was called but i basically just rode straight onto the box... it took me like 5 times to get enough balls up to have the speed to get across... but i finally did it... then i got too ballsy the next night at the same place and got too much speed and fell off and broke my wrist...
any tips at how to learn without bustin my ass repeatedly??? or just how to learn quickly... i don't mind bustin my ass too much, so long as i am getting better...

I don`t do rails because of the added risk of serious injury and with a mortgage i can`t afford to miss work. I will play around on very easy boxes and have been known to hit a picnic table. The key when 50/50 `ing a box or rail is to hit the thing straight and keep your body dead centered on your board. Any lean to heel or toe will cause the board to slip out from under you. Also, watch shoulder rotation, any small movement will cause your board to pivot and God only knows where and how you will leave the box or rail.
Also, start easy with low to the ground ride on boxes that are wide and allow for margin of error. Become fully proficient at these before moving up to bigger stuff. That thing you hit was a rainbow box and it more difficult that a simple flat box. Work on your technique on the simple flat box before hitting the rainbow. Also, if you are wanting to learn rails, wear protective gear when learning because you will fall a lot.

yeah i assumed that the rainbow box would be easier because you don't have to jump to get on it... i guess not...

Hopefully, your resort has a few ride onto boxes setup. If not, ask the park crew. It is the best setup to learn to grind boxes and rails.

FOR RAILS AND BOXES JUST KEEP STEADY AND MAINTIAN YOUR BALANCE THEN KEEP YOUR NOSE UP AS YOU RIDE OFF THE BOX THEN MOVE TO A MORE NARROW BOX BEFORE TRYING RAILS THEN ONCE YOU HAVE A NARROW BOX DOWN MOVE TO THE RAILS. JUST DONT BE INTIMIDATED JUST GO FOR IT.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. The best advice i can give you is to go straight. if you are leaning in one direction or another, or your board is slightly off center, you have a much greater chance of falling or messing up, or whatever it is you do to end up on the ground. But stick at it. It becomes a lot of fun, once you get down the basics, to mess around on boxes and rails.

I would recomend staying with boxes for awhile. Straight ones. None that swoop, or bend or kink. Ride straight across. I never do 50/50 I always have a good stance, grounded, knees bent and go toe edge so the rail or box is between my feet, not under it.
just stay grounded! Like a hurricaine was about to blow you over.

Theres this box at my hill and ive always wanted to go on it. what helped me is first i just came at it from an angle and just rode over the beginning. then i worked my way down and i finnalley got it. you have to go on it with the perfect speed. I f you go to slow, youll get stuck on it and if you go too fast, youll go out of control and fall off.

im fairly new to snowboarding too but i do know how to grind rails and boxs when you approach the ramps leading up to the rails or box you dont want to have too much speed especially if its a kink rail its probley best if your just starting out to just do a 50/50 grind and not try to slide or butter on them yet. but try to minamize your speed and just keep your feet flat on the box.

I think one main key is to know when you will lose it before you actually do, and ollie off. It won't look pretty but it'll look better then your face after you put it into a box :)

One thing i learned the hard way was when you are coming up to a rail or even a box rail remember to raise the tip of your board a little bit. Or even Jump enough to secure your board over the front of the rail.. I remember the 1st time i tryed a box the snow wasn't built close enough to the box and i didnt jump,,,,,, of coarse causing me to fall face first into the box.. also dont go too sloww or you will fall over good luck

Most of this was said up top but if i repeat dont kill me!

Im not to great at jumps, but jiibs is what i do! How i started with boxes was i picked the lowest easiest one to get on, it was the width of at least two of my boards and i just went and found out a few things the hard way.

1. Trying to turn (not staying flatbased) = ouch everywhere, your board will slip out from beneath you and youll just be in major pain.
2. Start small, just last week they had a comp at my mtn, and they had this sick picnic table gap setup i went to go do some steeze on it that i can do on any other box and ended up with four of the biggest black and blues ive had from allll my snowboarding in general
3.Find a box your comfortable with and just jam that one until you can start doing little more tech things on it then move on to somthing bigger.

Theres probably somthing i missed but basically its a try and see how your comfortable thing, after you get it youll learn that boxes are SO SO SO SO fun!
