Go to the resort shop and take advantage of that employee discount. They'll set you up nice. Or just go to any snowboard shop in town. They will get you all the right gear you need, and explain why you need it/why it should work. Support your local economy and give those shop kids something to do!

Unless you're going to hit only tricks, I believe the formula is the length should be between your chin and nose standing on end, and the width is determined by your shoe/ boot size. The taller you are the longer the board and consequently riders with bigger feet need wider boards to prevent your feet from catching in the snow while turning. Your best bet is to have the pros in the shop suggest the best one for you.
