Just stopping in to introduce myself. I''m Jason, 37 yrs old. never snowboarded till last friday at crested butte.
A little background for you, i was a sponsored skateboarder (1/2 and freestyle) from 10yrs old through my mid 20''s, cracked my board on a launch ramp and just never got a new one... skydived a few times in the army, splunked a bit. but nothing captured my attention like snowboarding.

So, last friday i strap a snowboard on and play around at the little hill by the red lady lift. i got the balance down and figured out my heel and toe digs. i felt confident so i was ready... i get up to the top and play around a bit more... feeling very confident ( i was a pretty good skater) so i think i got this...

i make my run... my balance is good, i making small tight curves... im speeding up... keeps speeding up... thinking its because im leaning forward, so i lean up a little... nope, that just makes me feel unstable, so i crouch down... still speeding up... i lost my balance and tumbled several times...

there was a guy there that was apparently a very good snowboarder and quite experience... he stopped and asked if i was ok, my ribs hurt a little and it took a minute to catch my breath, but i felt "ok" considering i tumbled a dozen times before i came to a stop on my back...

he said he''s gone fast (70+mph) and he said i was doing at least 50mph when i lost it...

So, i get back home and have a chiropractor friend x-ray me, and sure enough i have a half dozen fractures...

is it wrong for me to start planning my next snowboarding trip while under the influence of percocet?

Hi

Glad you're ok and still want to get on that board. I'm a "first-timer" also...I'm 51. First day it was all so new and I fell a lot, so I didn't realize that I had fun. Body ached a few days. Second time I knew I had fun (I still fell a lot)...more aches, but it still felt good. When I'm out there I feel like I've been transported to a different world. It's awesome!

I'm a bit bummed out at the moment, which prompted me to join this site. It's raining and my son and I were supposed to go to Mtn High tomorrow with a friend... heavy snow expected tonight thru tomorrow. My friend has not been feeling well so must take a rain check. Hopefully, the storm systems will continue into March.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Rei

Wow, what a helluva first time huh? I'm 44 and just started, I've got 5 days of the slopes in. I'm primarily a mountain biker who rides year 'round, but when the snow is too soft to ride the xc skiis have all the excitement of watching paint dry. Snowboarding was something I really wanted to try, and I can confirm it is addicting. Eating snow is part of the experience, I see advanced riders taking spills, so just laugh it off and keep going. I've been cautiously working up to the blue trails and what I call the "tweeners" (blue/black trails), and I am more and more motivated each time. I am into it enough already I just rode my own new equipment yesterday, and coincidently I am not sore the next day or two after. You'll have plenty of time to heal before next season, and I hope you stick with it. For all those out there who want to start take a lesson first, I can't recommend this enough. You have to learn to control yourself and your board first, speed comes later, your safety and everyone else's takes precidence.Take at least one lesson, rent a helmet, and get out there already ;-)

I have to agree about taking a lesson based on my own personal experience. I think I tend to be a little more cautious as I get older ... I can't afford to have broken bones at my age . I'm like those kids who stay back a grade. I've already repeated the beginner lesson twice with different instructors and plan on another one soon. I REALLY want to master the basics before moving on. It might take all of this season of just doing basics but I hope to be ready to move on next season. I have no surfing or skating experience so this is all very new to me. Also, for those wanting to start this sport, be sure you're in overall fairly good physical condition, especially your legs. Lots of squatting ... if you can stay off your behind long enough. So get those hams, quads and calves conditioned so you can enjoy your ride a little better.

One more thing, yes you WILL fall. Like the "Master" says, it's all part of the experience.Just pick yourself up and move on...it helps you get better. Now get out there and have some FUN! That's what it's all about. ENJOY!

Once you take a lesson or two the only way to get better is to get out there and do it. Start with the easiest green trails, work your way up slowly. The first 3 days I stuck to the greens, and slowly built up control and confidence. By the end of the 4th day started to venture into the blues, last sunday I was working up to the steeper blues. You're still going to catch your edge sometimes, especially at the end of the day when the snow starts to collect into isolated clumps with long exposed patches of smooth ice (at least here in the northeast), but you will get better and better. Keep at it!

hiya, nice to see there are more like me. I'm 41 and starting with my first snowboard lesson this week. here some history from me:
I was a dive instructor for about 20 years, about 2 years ago my docter told me to stop with diving as it was a problem for my lungs. my world colapsed at that time. been trying diffrent other sports but none worked for me. Been skateboarding as a kid and thought ill have a look at snowboarding. Even when i was diving, boarding looked nice and fun to do.
when my lessons are done Ill report back to you guys. hope I still like it then
Wish me luck and cya soon.
ps: sry for my poor english:D
