Question about tuning

I have been tuning snowboards for a couple of years now and recently started offering to tune boards for other people in the area, seeing as how the nearest place that does tuning is about half an hour away. Anyways my wife was spreading the word to one of her worker when her boss proceded to interupt and say i have no clue what i was doing. His reasoning behind this is because i dont use steam when waxing the board. I personally dont know where h got this info from but apparently he used to work at mtn high. Anyways I know im not supposed to use steam but before i called him out on it i figured id better double chec. Also if one were to use steam while waxing what would it do to the snowboard?
