Val Gardena is about thirteen miles long and runs more or less from west to east from the narrow entrance to the valley at Ponte Gardena up to Passo Gardena and Passo Sella, at the north-east of the “Südtirol” Dolomites.

You can reach Val Gardena from the south through Verona, Trento and Bolzano and from north trough Innsbruck and the Brennero Pass. From Chiusa you run trough ss242d to reach Val Gardena.

Val Gardena is well connected with the rest of Italy and also with the North Europe, thanks to a good train-net, whit trains stopping all at Bolzano and Bressanone and someone in Chiusa as well.

During the whole year round there is an efficient bus service to Val Gardena.
The new airport at Bolzano (35-40 from Val Gardena) connects the main city of the “Südtirol” with international airports, like Rome, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.

The main activities of the Val Gardena are the ones connected to the tourism, the gastronomy and the ski-teaching. An important branch of the industry is the wood-carving. This activity is born long time ago, when during the long and cold winters the people were staying all the time at home working on the wood, and so this hobby became a real art, known in the whole world.

The origins of the Ladin language go back to the Roman Empire, when the legions marched into Rheatia. The Ladin of the conquerors was mixed with the language of the native Rhaetians. During more than four centuries of Roman rule, this Rhaetian language spread from the Swiss Laps to the Adriatic. In Val Gardena, one speaks not just Ladin, but Italian and German as well.

The history, the art, the culture, the nature and the landscape... Val Gardena offers a mix of all that. One can admire not only the beautiful landscape and the unpolluted nature, but the beautiful constructions of the alpine culture, like the churches (S. Giacomo, S. Antonio, S. Cristina, S. Maria Ad Nives), the chapels (S. Silvestro in Vallunga, S. Anna) and the castles (Castel Gardena and the ruin of the Wolkenstein Castle) as well.

Maybe you don’t know, that in Val Gardena were born some famous people. The musician Giorgio Moroder has won three Oscars for the sound-track in “Midnight Express”, “Top Gun” and “Flashdance”. Moreover he has composed the Val Gardena hymn. The actor, producer and architect Luis Trenker has shown, though his films, the beauty of his Dolomite’s home to all the world.
