Lenggries
FUN UP ON THE MOUNTAIN The skiing scene in Lenggries is dominated by the area's most prominent mountain - Brauneck.
Brauneck is sure of having snow and slopes to ski on from December till after Easter, thanks to its altitude (peak 1700 metres, valley 700 metres) and to state-of-the-art snow making machines. Brauneck is a popular spot, attracting many skiers from Munich and throughout the region, experts and beginners alike and especially families, for Brauneck offers children and learner slopes as well as a world cup slope.
Brauneck has 90 brand new gondola with a capacity of 650 persons per hour, three chair lifts and no fewer than 16 drag lifts providing access to the various slopes, which can be as long as six kilometres or descend more than 800 metres.
The most challenging slope is called the Garlandhang, which is very steep indeed, but leads conveniently straight back to the new lift station. One slope, the Streidlhang, is lighted at night and skiers can thread their way down the hillside to music.
There are three ski schools in Lenggries, which offer courses on snowboarding and carving, as well.
Scattered across the mountain itself you will find eight different alpine huts (Berggasthäuser) offering food and drink, sunny terraces, aprés-ski, and cozy, old-fashioned Bavarian hospitality.
Brauneck is a true Mecca of winter sports, all beneath white and blue holiday skies.
DOWN THE VALLEY... Cross country skiers can hardly fail to be enthusiastic about all the trails in the Isar Valley. The trails can be used well into April. Again you will find all your needs covered by three ski schools. Of course, the trails are prepared and attended to just as professionally as the slopes are. Should you care to go for a stroll, you will find winter paths kept clear of snow for that very purpose.
Lenggries offers four cross country trails, ranging from seven kilometres to 22 kilometres in length, as well as two kilometres of floodlit track, additionally prepared for "skating", too. All in all, you will find more than 110 kilometres of cross country skiing possibilities.
...AS FOR THE NON-SKIERS If you come to Lenggries in the winter without skis, you need not sit in your room and wait for spring: you might like to go for a sleigh ride or down a toboggan run, or perhaps try your hand at "Eisstockschiessen", a German game somewhere between curling and shuffleboard, or you could go for a few laps around the new ice-skating rink.
Ice hockey fans can go to a game or two; Bad Tölz has a big stadium, home of the professional club EC Bad Tölz. When the team isn't playing or practising, the rink is open to the public; in other words, don't forget your skates.
