In the middle of the fells near Urho Kekkonen National Park is an international tourist center which has managed to retain its human touch, hospitality, and genuine Lapp mentality. Tourism has long traditions in Saariselkä and the tourist enterprises in the area know what it takes for a successful holiday!
In addition to high-standard services, Saariselkä offers a network of well-marked hiking, ski, and biking trails. The area's colorful gold history also attracts tourists. Guided gold-panning excursions are arranged to Laanila and Ivalojoki.
ACTIVITIES
You have to experience the nature of Lapland yourself. You can do that alone or in a group: the untouched wilderness, the glimmering white snow, the smell of coffee in the Lapp hut, the bark of leading dog at the head of the dog team... These are things to remember long after the holiday!
*SKIING
Saariselkä provides exceptionally good opportunities for cross-country skiing. The illuminated tracks, versatile terrain in the fells, and long skiing season offer the skiers a variety of alternatives to choose from. After spending the autumn holidays in October, you can come back to ski on the same snow at Easter!
The wild nature of Lapland next to the Fell Resort gives cross-country skiers an excellent opportunity to acquaint themselves with the environment and local people, such as Lintu-Antti (the Birdman Antti) with his fascinating stories.
*SNOWMOBILING
Snowmobile safaris range from a few hours to some that take you all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Even a beginner learns quickly the basics of operating snowmobiles with the help of skilled instructors.
You can rent a snowmobile or participate in a safari organized by the program service companies. For a beginner, the safari is a good way to get acquainted with driving a snowmobile.
*HIKING
Marked trails to Urho Kekkonen National Park from the center of Saariselkä - from the trailhead at the model of Lapp tepee - as well as from Kiilopää and Tankavaara. You can choose the trail best suited to your condition and schedule, ranging from a 1 km walk to a trek of several days. The park has Finland's densest network of wilderness cabins (with and without overnight facilities). The park's best-known attractions are Lake Luirojärvi and Sokosti Fell.
*FISHING
From many rivers, lakes, streams and ponds it is easy to catch trout, arctic charr and other notable types of fish. If you want to make sure you'll end up with a great catch at the end of the day, a local guide can direct you to the best fishing spots in the area. Fishing permits and other valuable information can be obtained from the Northern Lapland Nature Centre, from your guide, or from the Finnish Forest and Park Service Information Centre.
