Youngpyong is one of the two best resorts in South Korea (Muju being the other). However, the level of skiing is well below that of the Americas, Europe and New Zealand. It suffers from chronic low levels of snow, and relies heavily on man made snow through out December and February. There is NO off-piste skiing, and the ski patrol do little more than take up space when observing safety. The mountain is often extremely over-crowded in the early parts of the season, with huge numbers of people skiing little available terrain. The danger of this is that hundreds of beginners attempt the "red" (a black run that is the first advanced run to open) causing nothing short of disastrous results. Beginners skiing across the mountain coupled with GS racing speeds results in a steady flow of injuries through throughout the weekend. The weekend should be avoided like the plague during the early parts of the season, and a helmet should always be worn. It is also very wise for skiers to pay the few dollars for insurance offered on the mountain, or the 20 odd dollars for the season.
In saying all this however:
When the full mountain is opened the terrain is enjoyable and fast, with advanced runs available without beginners hindering skiers. For those that are beginners, you are always going to be faced with large amounts of traffic I am afraid. The week will offer a lot more relief. The runs are all groomed with double back diamond runs offering over 50 degrees of gradient in some areas, making GS great fun. The runs are long, and allow for good fun. Facilities are good, although the assortment of food may not be to the liking of many western folk. The restaurants are mainly Korean food, or very nasty adaptations western food such as oil soaked hamburgers and fries.
The key is to be well aware of all the sort comings in advance so you can get over them quickly and enjoy your day. Weekends will always spell long lines on the lower levelled slopes, but freedom mid season for advanced skiers is great! Enjoy

We visited Yongpyong from 24-28 Dec 2007. nice experience. We went directly from Incheon airport in Seoul using the bus to Gangneung. There is one to Yongpyong directly, take that one if you stay at the resport. 4 hour ride, the bus runs every 2 hours or so and you can get tickets right outside the terminal after getting your bags. Be sure to exchange plenty of money at the airport as the exchange rates are alot better than at the ski resort and credit cards are not commonly accepted if you plan to venture outside of the resort. We stayed at an apartment in Honseong, which is 5km from the resort. Recommend you stay at the YongPyong hostel, it is close to slope and cheap, but book FAR IN ADVANCE or call them if the web site says they are full. works better if you or your friend speaks korean. we were unlucky with no real snow, only machine made, but the grooming was excellent so the runs were not bad. It was crowded but the resort is huge by Asian standards, so get off the main routes and explore. we never waited more than 1 min at the chairlifts. the gondola is nice, great view at the top. if you are a good snowboarder, pay a bit extra and go straight there. the resort is well-organized with entertainment for non-boarders (video games, daycare, bowling, spa) and kids activites like sledding. Yongpyong is a family oriented resort, so it is dead after nightfall. go to Honseong to find cheaper food and a bar, (we found only one). This resort is supposed to be much better than anything closer to Seoul, like Bear's Town because it is bigger and the crowds disperse. we heard of 30 min waits for a 30 second run at Bear's Town. Have fun.

I'm flyinging into Incheon airport and will stay in the Yong Pyong resort.
Can you provide some more info regarding the direct bus?
I have googled high-and-low, but did not find any info about the direct bus, all buses seem to go to Lotte first and then require changing to another bus from there.
Thanks and regards,

I remember seeing a bus with a YongPyong sign on it at Incheon....I guess you could take a look around when you arrive and at worst just get a bus to Lotte and transfer from there.
